Instrument Description
This lovely baby piano built by the famous Chickering & Sons Piano Company of Boston. It is made in the rare "William & Mary" style with beautiful Dutch/English influenced carved legs and moldings. Here is some text taken from an original Chickering sales catalog describing this William & Mary design:
William & Mary (1689 – 1702)
“When William of Orange came to England to occupy the throne jointly with Mary, he brought many of his Dutch friends with him and they in turn brought their household goods. The presence of so much furniture of Dutch design in the palace of the King and houses of the court made it the fashion and English craftsman at first copied them very closely. Later on, in deference to Mary, Princess of England, daughter of James II, there developed a combination of certain features of English furniture with those derived from the tables, chairs, and cabinets which William and his nobles brought over with them from Holland. Thus was the style known as 'William and Mary' created. It has a substantial simplicity, together with a pleasing intimate quality that gives it an extraordinary personality and seems peculiarly the furniture of the house. The domestic home-loving nature of William and Mary, their honest purpose and fine integrity, their affections for each other, all seem to be reflected in the wholesome, sterling qualities of the style that bears their name. It is one particularly adapted to the case of a grand piano, and it has been most successfully applied to this beautiful little instrument. In combination with furniture of other periods it seems at its best”
One thing that makes this piano a bit amazing is that it was built and sold new in 1932 at the height of the Great Depression! With baby grand pianos like this selling new for several hundred dollars, only a wealthy few could afford such a luxury in 1932. Early 20th Century Chickering pianos were known for their huge tone quality despite their small size.
This piano is made of brown mahogany wood with a band of burl walnut around the base of the cabinet. It can be equipped with computerized player mechanisms if desired. A matching bench is included.
