Instrument Description

The firm of James & Holmstrom was known for being a pioneer in piano technology and evolution. In the early 20th Century, James & Holmstrom built a handful of "Transposing Pianos". These pianos can literally shift the keyboard up or down so that the pianist can transpose the tone of the piece to any key in the musical scale! For example, if a pianist has a piece of sheet music, the can play the music lower or higher to suit the range of a vocalist! All the pianist has to do is depress the center pedal to disengage the piano action from the keyboard, then move a lever under the keyboard to shift the keys either left or right. When the middle pedal is released, the piano action falls into place with the piano keys, but in a different musical key.

This rare Transposing Piano is made of beautiful Quarter Sawn Oak and is of the Country Victorian style. It is being restored to like new condition, inside and out. A matching oak piano stool is included.
